NWSE Spotlights French Exchange Students to Celebrate National French Week
The American Association of Teachers of French (AATF) is celebrating its 22nd annual National French Week in November. This is a week-long celebration of all things French in classrooms, school campuses and communities across the US.
NWSE is proud to take this opportunity to showcase the ways some of our amazing French students are making an impact on their host families and in their local high schools.
Featured Exchange Student: Gabin
Gabin, an only child from a small town in northeastern France, has become an integral part of the Fleming family. He has forged strong bonds with all members of his host family, from the younger kids to extended family members.
Since arriving in the U.S., Gabin’s English has improved tremendously. His fluency has come so far that, during a recent video chat with his biological mother, he started speaking English in mid-conversation – and his host mom had to remind him to switch back to French! “We all are blown away at how far his English has come,” says host dad Erik. Gabin’s hard work has paid off in the classroom as well, where his grades are better than many of his native-English-speaking peers.
Gabin has embraced every opportunity to experience American life. He’s been to a Phillies game, traveled with his host family on a family vacation, and participated in all sorts of family functions. He also plays JV soccer for his high school. But what truly stands out is how much he loves being part of a big family—whether it’s attending birthday parties, welcoming a new granddaughter, or even holding a newborn for the first time. As his host mother Tina points out, what truly amazes them is Gabin’s courage and adaptability. “I think he’s so courageous for coming to the U.S. to live with a large and busy family,” she says. “He integrates into every situation and gets along with everyone. He’s met my family, Erik’s family, and even my daughter-in-law’s family. He’s really become like one of our own.”
In just a few short months, Gabin has truly made the most of his exchange year. With his improved language skills, ability to fit into a large, busy family, and his willingness to embrace new experiences, it’s clear that Gabin is thriving in his American adventure.
Featured Exchange Student: Antonin
Antonin, a wonderful young man from the south of France, is truly one of a kind! He has a passion for trying new foods, which he shares with his host mom and younger host brother in Ocean City. They love exploring different cuisines together! Antonin and his host brother enjoy spending time outdoors – taking walks and playing basketball. When they’re not being active, they bond over movies and video games.
A talented pianist, Antonin is fortunate that his host mother has a piano at home, because he plays constantly, at home and at school. He’s incredibly dedicated to his music class and even performs for the school! Antonin goes above and beyond by helping other students learn to play piano, showing his generosity and love for the craft.
In addition to his musical talents, Antonin has made many friends at school, especially among those eager to learn French. Students and staff love greeting him in French, and his face lights up every time. Antonin is also considering joining the basketball team and is keen to get involved in as many school clubs as possible. His English skills are impressive as well!
Antonin’s story is especially meaningful to us because getting him into the right school was quite a challenge. His host mother was hopeful for him to attend the local high school, but the school was full. Rather than give up, Antonin’s NWSE Area Coordinator found a program that allowed him to attend a school outside of the district. Despite the extra distance, Antonin hasn’t missed a day, and all of his teachers and classmates adore him. The Guidance Counselor at his school can’t say enough about how wonderful Antonin is! She is always complimentary of Antonin and the positive impact he has on campus. Antonin is a fantastic young man, and NWSE is very proud of everything he has accomplished so far!
